Established in 2021, Spencers Vodka may seem like a newcomer to the spirits industry, but its roots run deep in the Australian fresh produce landscape. Our story begins way back in 1936 when S & W Carter was founded, a humble fresh produce company serving the bustling Brisbane region. Over the years, the company thrived, and in 1964, it found its home at the Brisbane Markets site in Rocklea, marking a pivotal moment in its history.
Today, the legacy lives on as Carter & Spencer Group, remaining a family-owned venture for generations since its inception.
Fast forward to 2018, where the modern chapter of our story begins to take shape. Craig Spencer, the 3rd generation visionary managing director of Carter & Spencer, couldn't ignore a pressing concern within the fresh food industry - the staggering amount of sweet potato wastage. Supermarkets' strict sizing requirements often led to large perfectly good sweet potatoes left abandoned in the fields.
Driven by a passion for sustainability, Craig embarked on a mission to tackle this problem. As a vodka enthusiast who relished the traditional versions made from potatoes, he saw an opportunity to make a difference. The idea was born: why not transform the leftover sweet potatoes into a premium vodka that would captivate taste buds and simultaneously address the waste issue?
What followed was two years of relentless dedication and collaboration with a talented team of distillers. Craig and his associates worked tirelessly to perfect the craft of transforming sweet potatoes into an exceptional vodka, preserving the rich heritage of traditional vodka-making while embracing innovation.
Finally, in a moment of triumph, Spencers Vodka emerged as the culmination of this passion, dedication, and commitment to excellence. Crafted from the finest sweet potatoes, it soon gained recognition for its smooth, refined taste, winning the hearts of vodka enthusiasts and environmentally-conscious consumers alike.
Today, Spencers Vodka stands tall, available in over 60 retailers across Australia, with exciting plans for further expansion. But this is only the beginning of our journey.
